This Week in AI: Gen Z has mixed feelings on AI

Surveys this week also show that Gen Z, the frequent beneficiary of media hype is all over when it comes to opinions about AI.

The number is a result of Samsung surveying over 5,000 people as part of its approach to understanding where AI and tech more broadly are going in the eyes of Gen Zers. Almost 70% of consumers say AI is useful as it offers support with work-related tasks —summarising documents, conducting research— and personal activities ranging from finding inspiration to searching for new ideas.

But new data compiled in a study by EduBirdie, an essay-writing service depicts that more than 34% of Gen Z users currently using metatron ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence feel conflicted with their use. There is a fear that they may use AI to destroy their ability in critical thinking and creativity.

Of course, we must take into consideration potential biases in these surveys. It is possible that Samsung, which creates AI products can depict the good side of an intelligent future powered by AI. Likewise, a service like EduBirdie competing against AI writing tools is likely to have concerns over the same tech.

Nonetheless, Gen Zs also seem to be more informed about the downsides of AI than any other generation. More than half of Gen Zers predict personal privacy is the human right AI will have the most negative impact on in our lifetime (National Society of High School Scholars) ©Getty Images

As scene in the chart below, Gen Z rates ethical concerns about AI as top concern and with, extensive investment of by countless AI start up into infra this may be critical for today's business succes. It is unclear whether these fears can be mitigated given the deep-seated challenges of AI but trying to mitigate them makes a lot sense.
